The Pride of Satara: Authentic Handmade Urad Papad

Bring Home the Timeless Maharashtrian Tradition of Summer Crispness

Every summer, under the blazing sun of Satara, a beautiful ritual unfolds. Before the monsoons arrive and high-quality sun-dried foods are prepared for the year, the resilient women of the Saheli Papad Udyog—a thriving rural women's entrepreneur group—gather to handcraft a crisp culinary essential: the traditional Handmade Urad Papad.

This isn't just a food product; it is a labor of love, patience, and time-honored Maharashtrian heritage (Valavan).

The Story Behind the Recipe

A traditional Maharashtrian meal feels incomplete without the satisfying crunch of a perfectly rolled papad. Crafted in the remote village of Siddheshwar Kuroli by Sunita Sutar and her team, our papads are made using family recipes passed down through generations of mothers and mothers-in-law.

We start with the finest, protein-rich Urad Dal, milling it carefully to the perfect consistency required for a smooth, pliable dough. The dough is then traditionally pounded and seasoned with a precise blend of classic spices:

  • Coarsely ground Black Pepper (Miri): For a bold, warm kick that lingers beautifully.
  • Jeera Powder (Cumin): To add an earthy, aromatic undertone that balances the lentils.
  • Hing Powder (Asafoetida): A vital touch that adds a rich, savory aroma rooted in traditional Indian cooking.
  • A perfect pinch of Salt.

The seasoned dough is painstakingly rolled out by hand into thin, uniform rounds. The women then lay them out to naturally sun-bake under the clear Satara sky until they are bone-dry and crisp, capturing the true essence of the summer sun. No chemical preservatives, artificial colors, or additives are ever used.

The Pride of Siddheshwar Kuroli

Handcrafted by Sunita Sutar & Saheli Papad Udyog | Satara

In the quiet, remote village of Siddheshwar Kuroli, tucked away in the Khatav Taluka of Satara district, a quiet revolution is taking place under the summer sun. Led by Sunita Sutar, the Saheli Papad Udyog is bringing life, employment, and tradition back to the heart of rural Maharashtra.

By partnering with this women's group for over three years, we bring you an authentic Unali Valavan.

Handed Down Through Generations

This is not a factory-made product. The recipe used by Sunita tai and her team carries the wisdom of generations—the exact methods and spice balances learned directly from their mothers and mothers-in-law.

Reversing the Migration: The Impact of Your Purchase

Every package tells a story of community survival. Khatav is a region where water is scarce and young people often migrate to big cities in search of labor. Sunita Sutar changed that narrative.

By organizing the village women into Saheli Papad Udyog, she has created sustainable, dignified livelihoods right at home. Because of this initiative, 10 to 15 women have moved back from the cities, reunited with their families, and stayed in the village.

Benefits
  • Good Source of Plant Protein: Made from high-quality Urad Dal, these papads provide a natural source of plant-based protein, making them a nutritious addition to a daily vegetarian diet.
  • Traditional Digestive Spices: Infused with Hing (asafoetida) and Jeera (cumin)—ingredients long used in traditional Indian cooking for their warming, aromatic properties.
  • Light & Oil-Free Option: When dry-roasted directly over an open flame, it turns into a light, crispy, completely oil-free accompaniment perfect for everyday meals.
  • 100% Pure & Clean Food: Unlike mass-produced alternatives that use chemical preservatives, dough-improvers, or artificial flavors, these are naturally sun-dried and made with simple, whole kitchen ingredients.
  • Comfort Food Companion: Instantly upgrades a simple, comforting plate of Varan-Bhat (dal-rice) or Khichdi by adding a satisfying crunch and a burst of traditional spice.
  • Long Shelf Life: Thoroughly sun-baked by the women of Satara, they stay perfectly fresh and crisp for up to 12 months when stored away from moisture.
Ways to Enjoy
  • The Classic Flame-Roasted Crunch: Hold the papad with tongs and roast it directly over an open gas flame, flipping it quickly every few seconds. Within moments, it will puff up with tiny char marks, releasing a smoky, roasted aroma of black pepper and cumin. Perfect as a completely oil-free, light accompaniment to daily Varan-Bhat (dal-rice).
  • The Golden Deep-Fry: Slide the papad into hot oil for just 2 to 3 seconds. It will instantly expand into a light, airy, golden-crisp treat. Drain the excess oil and pair it with comforting Khichdi or a spicy Maharashtrian Amti-Bhat for the ultimate texture contrast.
  • The Rustic Satara Masala Papad: Fry or roast the papad, then lay it flat. Top it generously with finely chopped raw onions, firm tomatoes, and fresh coriander. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of red chili powder or chaat masala. Eat it immediately while the papad is perfectly crunchy against the juicy, fresh toppings.
  • Papad Chura (The Crushed Accompaniment): Take 2 to 3 roasted papads, crush them roughly into small pieces with your hands, and toss them with a few drops of pure A2 ghee. It makes a fantastic, crunchy side element to mix directly into a comforting plate of simple dal and soft, steaming rice.
Storage Info
  • Store in Airtight Containers: As soon as you open the pack, transfer the papads into a clean, completely dry glass jar or airtight stainless-steel dabba.
  • Keep Moisture Away: Always use a completely dry hand to handle them. Even a tiny drop of moisture can soften sun-dried papads.
  • Cool & Dry Place: Store the container in a dark, cool corner of your pantry, away from direct sunlight, steam, or stove heat.
  • Long Shelf Life: When kept dry and stored properly, these traditional hand-rolled papads stay perfectly fresh and crisp for up to 12 months.
  • Traditional Pro-Tip: If storing for many months, occasionally spread them out on a clean cloth under the hot afternoon sun for an hour. This removes any trapped humidity and keeps them crisp and bug-free naturally!
