PIP Agro's Pearl Barley is minimally processed to retain its fibre and nutrition. These dainty pearls double up (in size & in taste!) when cooked, and are a great alternative to rice across meals. Barley Water - A Nutritious Drink
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Barley - Unhulled or Pearl
- 4.5 Cup Filtered water
- 1/2 Teaspoon Lime Juice - Optional
- 1/4 Teaspoon Himalayan Pink Salt - Optional
Instructions
-
Wash barley a few times and drain out the water. Make sure the water runs clear. Soak barley in 4.5 cups of filtered water for about 6-8 hours.
-
*Stovetop Pressure Cooker Method: Add water to a stovetop pressure cooker. Place the soaked barley dish (along with the filtered water) inside the pressure cooker. Allow it to cook for 4-5 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
*Direct Stovetop Method: If you are cooking on a stovetop directly, place the dish on medium-high flame. Once it starts to boil, boil the barley for 10 minutes. I have used this method for this instance.*Instant Pot: If you are using an Instant Pot, use the Porridge option with vent closed. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
-
Once the barley has released its nutrients, the water will look creamy white. Make sure the barley grains are super soft before turning off the stove. Allow the barley water to cool down.
-
Using a sieve, drain the barley water into 4 cups. You can discard the barley grains in your compost.
- You can drink the barley water directly, or add some lime juice and salt to taste.
Cooking Method
- Rinse ¾ cup of Pearl barley under running water till the water is clear.
- Add this to a saucepan with 6 cups of water, and let simmer for 25-30 minutes, or till the barley is cooked through.
- The pearls retain their shape and chewiness, yet become softer on the bite.
Serving Suggestion
Once barley is cooked through, Strain and reserve the water. Flavour with lemon juice and salt- and give your gut a treat! The cooked barley is great to add to a quick warm salad or soup too
Experience
Appearance: Dainty Ivory pearls that can sometimes look too beautiful to touch!
Aroma: Faintly sweet or mostly no peculiar whiff marks barley at its prime
Taste notes: Tender yet chewy mouthfeel and mild nutty taste is peculiar to each hulled grain of barley, when cooked.
History :
One of the first cultivated grains of the Fertile Crescent, barley was domesticated about 8000 BCE from its wild progenitor Hordeum spontaneum. Archaeological evidence dates barley cultivation to 5000 BCE in Egypt, 2350 BCE in Mesopotamia, 3000 BCE in northwestern Europe, and 1500 BCE in China. Barley was the chief bread plant of the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans and of much of Europe through the 16th century. Genetic studies suggest that Tibet was an additional, independent centre of domestication for cultivated barley.
