Inside the Pack

Our native desi Kala Chana — or brown chana — carries the deep, authentic flavors of the sun-drenched fields of Latur, where it is grown naturally by Namdev Sabde and his collective of traditional farmers. This ancestral crop is cherished for its distinct, firm texture and concentrated, nutty taste. It is highly sought after across Maharashtra for crafting the perfect, fiery usal, where its vitality shines when sprouted alongside other heritage pulses. This same high-quality desi chana is also the star ingredient behind the Salted Roasted Chana available on our website. Whether boiled into a wholesome afternoon chaat or enjoyed as a crisp, roasted snack, a single bite reveals the earthy character of pure, honest farming.

Know Your Farmer

In the heart of Latur, Namdev Sabde has spent over two decades nurturing the soil through natural farming. While the world moved toward chemical fertilizers and modified crops, Namdev chose to conserve the precious native desi seeds passed down by his ancestors. Today, his farm yields unpolished Moong Dal, Chana Dal, whole Chana, Kabuli Chana, Urad Dal, Jowar Maldandi, and Yellow Jowar — all kept entirely unpolished and free from chemical powders, retaining their natural integrity. Inspired by his father’s vision, Namdev’s son chose to stay rooted in the village, working side-by-side to keep ancient seeds alive and ensure what reaches your plate is clean and honest.

Ingredients
  • Whole Desi Kala Chana
Ways to Relish
  • The Classic Usal: Soak overnight, sprout for a day, then cook with a fiery Maharashtrian masala base — mustard seeds, dried red chili, onion, and fresh coconut — for an authentic, thick usal served with pav or bhakri.
  • The Wholesome Chaat: Boil soaked kala chana with a pinch of rock salt, then toss with raw onion, tomato, fresh coriander, lemon juice, and black salt for a hearty, satisfying afternoon snack.
  • The Iron-Tawa Dry Roast: Parboil, dry completely, and slow-roast on a heavy iron tawa with a dollop of Bilona ghee and black salt for a crunchy, nostalgic snack — the same way our Salted Roasted Chana is made.
  • The Sprouted Salad: Sprout soaked kala chana for 24–48 hours and toss with cold-pressed groundnut oil, lemon, and native spices for a fresh, wholesome breakfast or light meal.
Why Choose?
  • Ancestral Desi Seed: Grown from native seeds preserved by Namdev Sabde’s collective in Latur, delivering the rich, nutty depth of flavor characteristic of traditional farming.
  • Excellent Sprouting: Sprouts fully and evenly — a visible sign of natural purity and vitality, ideal for usal and salads.
  • Honest & Unpolished: Free from oil-glazing, marble dust, or chemical washes — clean, honest food for your family.
  • Versatile Kitchen Staple: From usal and chaat to roasted snacks — one grain, many traditional uses.
  • Direct-from-Farmer Purity: Cultivated using natural farming methods in Latur, ensuring a clean, chemical-free meal that supports traditional agriculture.
Caring Guide
  • Keep It Sealed & Dry: Transfer grains into a clean, dry glass jar or airtight steel container. Moisture is the biggest enemy of chemical-free pulses.
  • The Quick Fridge Shield: Store the container inside your refrigerator to naturally prevent any pests from forming — the simplest, zero-effort method.
  • The Traditional Guard: If storing on a kitchen shelf, drop 2–3 dried whole red chilies or a few clean, dry neem leaves into the jar — ancient, natural repellents that protect the grains safely.

Q.What makes PIP Agro’s Kala Chana different from regular market chana?
A. Commercial varieties are often modified for massive size, which dilutes their natural flavor. PIP Agro’s Kala Chana is grown from traditional, native desi brown chana seeds, giving it a smaller, more concentrated grain that packs a much deeper, nuttier flavor and a superior nutritional profile.
