A small evergreen tree with aromatic bark of about 6-8 m in height found growing wild in southern coastal regions of India. The bark is used as culinary spice and also in medicines.
What is cinnamon?
Cinnamon is a cultivar from the inner bark layer of different evergreen trees belonging to the genusCinnamomum. Once the cinnamon bark is shaved off from the tree stump, it naturally takes on a coiled shape. The processing method continues when the bark is dried, portioned into smaller segments for cinnamon sticks, or processed into a fine powder for ground cinnamon.
Cinnamon Medicinal Uses
Cinnamon Bark Is One Of The Common Ingredients In Spice Mixtures Used In India. Dalchini Is Known To Increase Salivation And To Improve Digestive Functions As Recommended By Indian Ayurveda. It Also Acts As A Local Antiseptic By Virtue Of Its Antibacterial Action.
The Botanical name of black pepper is “ Piper nigrum “ and belongs of the family of Piperaceae.
The peppercorn is the fruit of the plant, and depending on when it is harvested, processed, and dried, it can produce black, green, or white peppercorns.
Harvest
Harvesting commences from third year onwards. The harvesting season is from November to March. Harvest is done by hand picking the whole spikes when few berries in the spike start turning red. The berries are separated and dipped in hot water (80°C) for one minute and sun-dried for 7 to 10 days.
